Metal - CDP Theme Day

Metal or metalling has had two distinct usages in road paving. Metalling originally referred to the process of creating a carefully engineered gravel roadway. The route of the roadway first would be dug down several feet. Depending on local conditions, French drains may or may not have been added. Next, large stone was placed and compacted, followed by successive layers of smaller stone, until the road surface was a small stone compacted into a hard, durable surface.

Road metal later became the name of stone chippings mixed with tar to form the road surfacing material tarmac. A road of such material is called a "metalled road" in British usage, or less often a macadam road, however the most common name applied to any road surface is "tarmac", regardless of it's actual construction. The word metal is derived from the Latin metallum, which means both "mine" and "quarry", hence the roadbuilding terminology.

  2. We have lot's of those chip stone surfaced road (On the tar layer, they sprinkle the small stones and compact them).
I hate it because the re a so many loose chips on new surface and kind a dangerous. Most commonly find on state highway where we normally go 100k/h.

  3. Thanks for that explanation, Magiceye. I always wondered why Brits called them metaled roads, and I just assumed actual metal was involved. Now it makes perfect sense. In California, we say the road is "paved" or "unpaved". But in the UK "pavement" only refers to the sidewalk!

  4. I'd forgotten this. Fascinating post, thanks so much. A different take on today's theme and a great one.

  5. Once again you've reminded me that in Australia we use both British and American English, though the British version is probably older and falling out of use now.

  7. Yes I too had wondered why we called them metalled-roads when the top surface is always tarmacadam - how roads are made up was brought home to me earlier when I took various photos of roadworks and holes in the ground.
