The Knesset Eliyahoo, also Knesset Eliyahu, is an 1885 synagogue in Fort (area) in downtown Mumbai. It was built by Jacob Elias Sassoon and his brothers to commemorate their father and is run by the Jacob Sassoon Trust. In 1985, the President of India, Giani Zail Singh, visited to honor the centennial of the building of the synagogue. The Indian Post Office issued a stamp in honor of the centennial.

  6. Very interesting, we don't usually think of Jews in India but I knew a Jewish family who sheltered in India during WWII. They would have perished in Germany had India not welcomed them.

  9. A 125 years!! Stands in glory and still doing the honors.

The plastic shades look so incongruous with the harmony of the architecture :)

  19. A beautiful synagogue. It is unlike the architecture around it and yet harmonizes well. Is this, perhaps, a metaphor for the Jewish population in India?
