Jamun

Bought some Jamuns yesterday. It is the season for Jamuns now. It is fleshy and has a seed like berries. It is slightly sweet and sour, and colours your tongue purple. 😀

Syzygium cumini, commonly known as Malabar plum, Java plum, black plum, jamun or jambolan, is an evergreen tropical tree in the flowering plant family Myrtaceae, and favored for its fruit, timber, and ornamental value. It is native to the Indian Subcontinent, adjoining regions of Southeast Asia, including Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and the Andaman Islands. It can reach heights of up to 30 metres and can live more than 100 years. A rapidly growing plant, it is considered an invasive species in many world regions. The Jamun fruit is not only known for its nutritional value but also it is a powerhouse of several health benefits.

Ready to eat

The famous Alphonso mango, popularly known as Hapoos, cut and diced, ready to eat. Actually it is best eaten whole, skinning it with one's teeth and then biting into the delicious sweet flesh with its juice streaming down to the elbow, finishing it off by sucking on the seed, not a bit of flesh left behind. It's an art!

The Hapoos Mango

It's the mango season and the Hapoos mango is here! Hapoos is the Indianised name of the delicious Alphonso mango.

The 'Alphonso' mango is a named mango cultivar that originated in India. The variety is named after Afonso de Albuquerque, a Portuguese general and military expert who helped establish Portuguese colonies in India. The Portuguese introduced grafting on mango trees to produce varieties like Alphonso. The Alphonso is also one of the most expensive varieties of mango, and is grown mainly in western India.
