We used to have a lot of drinking fountains - for humans and for dogs. I imagine from the same era. Troughs for horses were less ornate(here, that is) and the ones which remain, I think, are older. We no longer need troughs for horses (here in England)and maybe not for dogs - but we could do with drinking fountains for people again.
