Cross Island, locally known as Chinal Tekdi, meaning hill of prostitutes, is an uninhabited or sparsely inhabited island located in Mumbai harbour, India, between the coast at Dockyard Road, and Elephanta Island, about 400 m from Ferry Wharf on the east coast of Mumbai. The island is host to an oil refinery and several large gas holders, and features the ruins of a fort.

ReplyDeleteVery interesting!
ReplyDeleteQuite a complex history.
ReplyDeleteHari OM
ReplyDeleteI like the photo... .but a little confused. I thought Cross (aka Butcher) was where the old Raj prison was and the refinery/oil transport was on Jawahar Dweep? You can see from this shot there is no space whatsoever to carry the industry mentioned... YAM xx
Cross island is different from Butcher island. Cross is closer to Mumbai harbour and Butcher island is closer to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust for ease of oil storage.
Deletewow hill of prostitutes? That's an interesting name.

DeleteWonderful, Great to know about Chinal Tekdi. Amazing shot.
ReplyDeleteThank you Rupam.
DeleteWhy that name?
ReplyDeleteThere are 2 theories
Delete1. Portugese missionaries or authorities placed a prominent Christian cross on the island or on it's fort hence..
2. Since the island sits on the approach to Mumbai's docks, ships had to necessarily cross this island to reach the harbour.
