Vintage taxis

All these are vintage taxis (indigenised Fiats more than 25yrs old) waiting outside Lokmanya Tilak Railway Terminus at Kurla, to take arriving passengers to various destination in Mumbai. As per the new edict from the Government, most of these taxis will be scrapped as of 04Dec08. This may possibly be the last run for them. The drivers/owners have been promised assistance in getting new models to be operated as taxis in a move to reduce air pollution in the city.

  1. I guess you do have to get rid of them for air quality, but they look large and comfortable...

  2. That's interesting -- how much help will they get, I wonder. Hopefully, it will help reduce air pollution. Would be nice if we started doing something like that here.

  3. A lot of men thrown out of work in one stroke. Seems harsh.
I would have thought more pollution came from two strokes.
I have noted that your atomosphere there seems clear. I imagine Delhi is far worse being landlocked.

  6. It seems a shame to scrap these taxis. They look lovely.

  7. That is one positive step by Maharashtra govt. I hope the taxi drivers will be able to take the brunt.

  8. wow, talk about old taxis. in greece, we used to have a lot of old mercedes taxis, but thankfully they are being taken out of operation for the same reasons as your vintage ones are leaving service...

  9. I wonder what they will do with all those scrapped vehicles. Will they find their way into the rural towns on the second-hand, third-hand route? Or...?

  10. @most of them are being scrapped in the Kurla junkyard where the crew just disassembles a car within minutes..

  11. They were still on the road in Jan, 09. They show every year of their wear and tear. I'm sure the gas tank in the trunk is unsafe as well. Drivers can fit an amazing amount of people & suitcases in them!
