ABC Wednesday - G for Gloria Church

Gloria Church (Portuguese: Nossa Senhora de Gloria) is one of the oldest Roman Catholic churches in Mumbai built by the Portuguese Franciscans in 1632. The church is situated in the Byculla suburb of Mumbai. The original Gloria Church, was built in 1632 by the Franciscans funded by the DeSouza E’Lima family, who owned the Mazagaon island which they procured from the King of Portugal in 1572. The old church was demolished in 1911 and the present one was built at Byculla. The modern Gloria church was built in English Gothic style. The church’s beauty has inspired many filmmakers to shoot their films on its premises. Prominent among them was Manmohan Desai’s Amar Akbar Anthony, released in 1977.

    I'd forgotten the Portuguese influence in India, just thinking about the English. So I wouldn't have pegged a Catholic church in Mumbai.

    I didn't realize the Portuguese had settled that far north. I knew there was a heavy concentration of Portuguese settlers in Goa, but I suppose in a city and port as large as Bombay, everybody got there at some point.

    I studied at the Antonio D'Souza school here :)
    Saw this everyday...and it is really magnificent and lovely. You would notice that even as a little boy.
