Tiny apartments all in a row. This is known as a 'chawl' a very popular housing concept in old Mumbai, mainly occupied by the vast labour class of textile mills of yore. This is a picture of a chawl in Dadar.

Interesting shot as always, glad I don't have to live quite that close to anyone though. Enjoy your week!

Very interesting fact. Thanks for the education.
ReplyDeleteThat's very interesting.
ReplyDeleteNice shot reflecting a living style.
ReplyDeleteI lived in an apartment in my earlier years...glad that is over!
Interesting shot!
ReplyDeleteLooks neat, very interesting info on this thanks!
ReplyDeleteThat first one almost looks like a jail. It doesn't look like people still live there. What do they do with it now?
ReplyDeleteDeepak, I assume an entire family lives here in a very small space. I know when I stayed at Sahar, with my friend who worked for Royal Caribbean, they had a pretty large home. Of course, his salary was almost $20,000 annually and his uncle, who had moved to Canada and was an engineer, initially helped them build their house. Others in his village, lived in much smaller places. We, in the U. S., often don't appreciate how much we have in relation to what life is like for others. After spending time in India, though, I was impressed with the kindness shown to me and the fact that, though people might not have much, they were willing to share whatever they had.
ReplyDeleteI would guess a tiny apartment is better than being on the street...are they still being occupied?
ReplyDeleteBeautiful capture.
ReplyDeleteHaving seen them in movies I have been dying to visit a Chawl!!! Now that am in Mumbai may be one day!
ReplyDelete@Bull Rhino and Jacob... these are still occupied. Space is at a premium in Mumbai!
ReplyDeletebel angle de prise de vue de ce bout de quartier.
ReplyDeletesmall apartments that the poor can afford--we have them here, too.
ReplyDeleteGreat angle... and boy, they are small, but better than living under a bridge, or sleeping in the park, I imagine.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how do they look like inside! As jacob sid, better tiny apparment that street!
ReplyDeleteNice post. The Chawl you mentioned is getting a new name "Nano housing." With scares resources, I guess we have appreciating the yester year's facts!
ReplyDeleteI imagine these appartment are also small.I agree with Jacob, it's better than street!

ReplyDeleteGreat shot! thanks for sharing your world.
ReplyDeleteYou give us a glimpse of life here that is so interesting. It enhances our understanding and appreciation of Mumbai and its people at the same time it enhances our appreciation and understanding of our own homes.
ReplyDeletelove the shot and a great focus on 'your world'
ReplyDeleteBetter than living of the street. . .
ReplyDeleteNamaste & Aloha, Friend!

Very interesting, and I find there is even a Wikipedia entry for 'chawl'. There were similar tenements in the big cities in the eastern US during the great population shifts, especially in New York the late 1800s. People have to live somewhere!
ReplyDeleteIts almost antique ;)
ReplyDeleteLooks very poor there ....
love the architecture - let's hope they don't get torn down...
ReplyDeleteamazing..made me lil senti abt mumbai :D
ReplyDeleteIs it still occupied? It looks empty and I can't believe apartments remaining empty for long in Mumbai.
