Dahi handi (Pot of curds) is traditionally celebrated on Lord Krishna's birthday who apparently loved it and would beg, borrow or steal to get it. In the picture above you will see a pot hanging from the centre. Well, now it contains just flowers. Youth form the neighbourhood will form human pyramids and break the pot. The group that breaks it will be monetarily rewarded. Unfortunately this celebration has been taken over by political parties and become a reason for drunken orgies.
The picture above was clicked in Bandra east. The pot was broken late at night hence I do not have any pictures of the human pyramid.
I've never known about this before. What an interesting post.
ReplyDeleteI found some pictures of the festival on Google. It looks amazing, chaotic. Does anyone ever get hurt?

Yes people do get hurt. Now there is a move to restrict the height of the pyramid and also an age limit for the participants.
DeleteI love watching this... :-)
ReplyDeleteSounds very interesting!
ReplyDeleteI'm really scared of this. Young people break bones and some get hurt grievously.Onlookers enjoy, though.
ReplyDeleteReally interesting!
ReplyDeleteIt's too bad that what was once a valid and fun activity has been ruined by a bunch of drunken politicians!
ReplyDeleteThank You for sharing
ReplyDeleteNice click.
