Built at the major road junction in Ballard Estate, this war memorial commemorates two British and one Italian employees of the Bombay Port Trust who fell during the Great War (1914-1918) as well as the contribution made by the Port Trust in the British war effort.
The Ballard Bunder Gate was once the formal entrance to the Ballard Pier railway station, from which the romantic Frontier Mail chugged out for its long trek to Peshawar. The gatehouse has now been developed into a museum, and it is a treasure trove of photographs about Bombay, it’s port, it’s people, and it’s railways, and the port railways! But it was closed as I was there too early and on a weekend.
